I think the way to move a project team from Level 2 to Level 3 thinking, company to project, is a contracting issue first. Need to structure contracts that share risks and rewards. Doing this has been a Holy Grail quest for decades. Can’t expect employees to work against their employer’s commercial interests.
Hey Richard, yes, this is the IPD model. And it’s a great way for incentivizing project first thinking. It can also be done by partnering and talking about this framework at the beginning and throughout the project. Either way, we should strive for this.
Your concern is understandable. But no contract rules your minute-to-minute behavior with colleagues. How one behaves with others is a personal choice. Asking “what’s best for the project?” Is the Level 3 question. The choices that surface from that question nearly always allow the team to navigate the Level 2 impacts so no one loses, we just get better choices. Experience has taught us this and confirmed it over and over.

Well said Dan.
Correction: Meant Level 2 to Level , not 2 to 3.
